Cloisonne Japanese Wireless Porcelain Hillside Village Vases - Late Meiji Period

We have the privilege to offer you this gorgeous pair of Japanese wireless cloisonne porcelain Japan hillside village vases from the late Meiji period.

Circa - 1890.

One vase measures 4 13/16" tall and the other 4 3/4" tall. Both mouths on the vases measure 1 7/8" in diameter and the bases 1 15/16" in diameter.

Features an applied rim and base. They are decorated in a combination of silver yusen and musen enamels with a mountainous landscape. The scene includes a temple partly hidden in between a foreground of pine trees and other foliage. If the temple is facing you, there appears to be a river with mountain peaks rising in the distance on both vases. One from the left and the other from the right. The design has been executed in varying shades of blue, green, red, orange and yellow shaded enamels on a bluish-white enamel ground. This design is similar to those of Ando Co; however, these gorgeous pieces do not bare the Ando Co. mark.

Yusen compartments are created by using wire on to contain enamel and Musen is wireless cloisonne. The Ando Company is one of the most famous for producing exceptional pieces of wireless cloisonne.

The cloisonne definition is enamel work in which colored areas are separated by thin metal bands fixed edgewise to the ground and the origin is French. Cloisonne is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects in recent Centuries using vitreous enamel and in older periods, inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials. The enamel works are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which needs to then be fired in a kiln.

This vases are in great condition and the colors within them compliment each other well. Wear commensurate with age and use. On one of the vases there is a minor hairline and a ding in the metal on the base, which the photos will show. This does not at all take away from the beauty of these exceptional pieces.
