Samuel Hill started pottery in Flemington, New Jersey in 1815 and he manufactured drain tile. Abraham Fulper became a partner in 1847 and in 1860 he purchased the firm. After 1881, the business was operated as the Fulper Brothers and in 1899 it was operated as, Fulper Pottery Company. Abraham hired high end designers, modelers and chemists such as, Kugler and Stangl, as well he also helped to design and do glaze effects. John Kunsman was hired in 1899 and was the master potter. In 1909 the first art pottery was produced, which at this time, the firm was under William H Fulper II, grandson of Abraham, and at this time, they named the pottery line, Vasekraft and pottery production continued for 20 years.
In 1929, the Fulper Pottery buildings were destroyed in a fire and production was moved to the Trenton plant. At this time a small part of art pottery was produced in Flemington until 1935. Stangl took ownership of the firm in 1930. At this time they produced dinnerware and then in 1955 the name was changed to Stangl Pottery.
