Handsome, large, oil on canvas portrait painting of Joseph Edward Simmons by noted artist Thomas W. Wood (1823-1903).
Measuring an impressive size of 60”s tall (5 feet) by 46” wide and an image size of 45” by 32” wide.
The frame is absolutely spectacular and has a dust shield on the back. (Photographed).it is in nice condition with the spectacular frame having a few minor losses on the bottom.
It is signed in the lower left and has a plaque that reads: J. Edward Simons/29th President of the Chamber of Commerce, 1907 - / Presented by J. Edward Simmons in response to a resolution adopted by the Executive Committee of the Chamber, May 1st, 1900. Painted from life in 1903 by Thomas W. Wood.
This is such a privilege, as most of Thomas Wood’s paintings are found in museums. Thomas Wood grew up in the town of Montpelier, Vermont. His art education from working in his father's cabinet shop, making painted signs, doing patent drawings for inventors and initially doing some portraits. In 1852 he opened a studio in New York, doing portraits and had a summer home in Montpelier, Vermont. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1871 and served as president for 8 years. Wood spent his summers in Montpelier and late in his life he founded Wood Art Gallery in the town.
