This is an original oil painting by noted Notre Dame poster artist, James R. Wainwright (1935 - 2021). Wainwright did over 50 posters for the Notre Dame football team, “Tradition of Excellence" being his most popular Notre Dame University poster, and designed over 160 beer steins for Budweiser Beer to promote the Anheuser Busch Collector's Club.
This is his most important painting of the most highly noted Notre Dame Hall of Fame coach, Frank Leahy, (1908 - 1973) called the master of Notre Dame Football, including his winning seasons along with his famous players and his past coach Knute Rockne.
This oil painting on artist board was presented to Frank Leahy at the Toots Shore Restaurant as a presentation of his induction into the College Football Hall Of Fame in 1970.
Accompanying this painting is an original extensive appraisal done of this painting for his brother, Thomas Leahy, by Howard Art Gallery, Chicago, Illinois on January 14th, 1974, shortly after Frank Leahy died. It appraised at that time for $5500.00.
This fine piece of history should be in the Football Hall of Fame for everyone to enjoy. A very rare one-of-a-kind piece of College Football History. The frame size is 46.5" x 36.5", having an image size of 39.5" x 29.5" and weighs about 8 pounds.
