Prince Albert Miniature Painting on porcelain in Fabulous Frame
Beautiful miniature painting on porcelain of Prince Albert in an absolutely beautiful frame.
Circa 1840 and the painting measures 4 1/2” x 3 1/4” with the fabulous frame it measures, 10 1/2” x 10 1/4”.
Prince Albert was king in all but title, an interesting character. He quickly assumed the role of private secretary and advisor to Queen Victoria. Victoria spent so many early years of marriage pregnant, with which Albert stepped up to the plate, standing in for his wife and advising her on matters of national and international importance.
Queen Victoria commissioned Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1819 to 1861) to paint portraits of her and Prince Albert. This is a wonderful, well executed painting on porcelain, after Franz Xaver Winterhalter of Prince Albert in the Order of the Garter Robes.
Queen Victoria commissioned Sophie Lienard to paint miniatures from some of these large portraits for gifts to her many friends. (Sophie Lienard,1837 to 1845, was a French portrait artist who specialized in miniatures. She lived in Paris and also exhibited at the Salon in Paris.) We are sure this is one of her miniatures from the period of the original frame and the fineness of the painting, look carefully, the detail is amazing.
At just 42, Prince Albert died in December of 1861. Queen Victoria wore black for the rest of her life and slept beside a photograph of her husband.
It is in nice condition and beautifully painted.
