American Ames Mex War 13 Star Screaming Eagle Officers Artillery Sabre Sword - Circa 1830
Beautiful, original, American open mouthed screaming Eagle head Officers artillery sabre sword made by the Nathan P Ames Co., from circa 1830, situated in Springfield, Massachusetts from 1832 to 1838.
The blade has beautiful etching with noted eagle and needle signed etched in Liberty below the eagle and arrows with thirteen stars above the eagle.
This is a noted feature of early Ames swords, this sword being unsigned. Both sides of the blade are nicely etched, as the photos show with another eagle being etched on the other side as well.
The blade is 27 1/2” long with a total length of 32 1/2” and a total length with the scabbard of 33”. The sword was used during the American Mexican War and possibly later into the Civil War. It is a great piece of American history.
As the photos show, this sword is in nice condition and the scabbard has wear commensurate with age. A truly hard to find American made sword, especially in this condition, with all the engraving and etching, as well as the sought after open mouth screaming eagle head handle.
The sword has 10 balls on the hand guard and has a bone grooved grip with lower brass ferrule and peened pummel. Please view all photos as they are part of the description.
