John Cranch's portrait works are in fine collections, as well as in the National Academy, his prints are at the Smithsonian Institution, and his drawings are at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. John Cranch, 1807 - 1891, was an American Artist and print collector. He was born in Washington D. C. to William Cranch. His brother Christopher was also an artist and his brother William was a painter and a poet. He traveled to Italy in 1830 with a letter of introduction from John Quincy Adams and spent 4 years there studying the work of the Old Master’s and painted, creating portraits and scenes from Shakespeare.
Measuring a nice size of 34” by 28 1/2”, this painting has been lined and laid on board around the 1920's. It retains an original, early frame.
This painting from 1844 is exceptionally well done and shows the talent of this noted artist, being of a prim and proper lady of the period. Just look at the great detail. Enjoy!!!
