Antique Russian Icon, Mother of God, Joy to All Who Sorrow ~ Circa 1800
Beautiful antique Russian Icon, Mother of God, Joy to All Who Sorrow.
Circa 1800 and measures 10 1/2" high x 8 3/4" long.
It is depicting the Theotokos (The Virgin Mary), as the mother of God and she is holding baby Jesus. On her sides are the people asking her for forgiveness and prayers. Her head is tilted down to her right side, as if she is hearing their needs and prayers. It is as if she is exuding her limitless love in helping heal their sorrows. This beautiful icon has plenty of wonderful history and healings found if researched.
The history of this icon stems through Centuries:
On October 24th, the church celebrates the icon of the Mother of God, Joy of All Who Sorrow in Moscow. On July 23rd, the church celebrates the icon of Mother of God, Joy of All Who Sorrow in St. Petersburg. On November 19th, a third icon of similar name and design is celebrated. The icon is in beautiful condition, with a chip next to baby Jesus, which is consistent with the age and is in untouched, original condition. It is all hand painted with beautiful mute colors done in gorgeous detail and gold leaf, while retaining its original varnish.
* I took a main photograph with light, as well, to emphasis the gorgeous colors.
This piece would look absolutely stunning in any setting. Would be a great addition for any religious or icon collector.
